Lin-Manuel Miranda Facts/Things you don’t know about Lin-Manuel Miranda:

  • Manhattan-born Miranda worked as a high school English teacher before charting his showbiz career.
  • Politics is a common topic in the Miranda household while he was growing up, as his father used to work as a political advisor. Among his father’s clients included former New York City Mayor Ed Koch.
  • Miranda wrote former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s campaign jingle in 2004. He’s also into comedy. In fact, he founded Freestyle Love Supreme, a comedy touring group that performed at various festivals. This is where he first started writing stories and music, mixing hip-hop with improving.
  • His geek credentials include writing music for “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Director J.J. Abrams went to watch him perform at “Hamilton” and met with him during intermission. He offered his services to him as a joke.
  • He wrote In the Heights while he was working as a 7th grade English teacher. Aka coolest teacher ever.
  • Les Miserables was the first musical he ever saw.
  • He wrote jingles for politicians, specifically NY governor Eliot Spitzer’s 2004 campaign.
  • Benjamin Franklin was going to be a character in Hamilton, and was going to have a country-rock Decemberist-y type song. But, alas, it was cut.
